recomine - rethinking resources
The recomine alliance brings together companies, research institutions, educational establishments, public authorities, and non-governmental organizations from the greater Ore Mountains region. The alliance aims to find new solutions for legacy sites resulting from mining and metallurgical operations.
Since 2021, the Zinngrube Ehrenfriedersdorf has served as a site for various recomine projects:
- TERZinn I (April 1, 2021 – March 31, 2024): This project on sustainable water management was developed in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institut für Keramische Technologien und Systeme (IKTS). At the Ehrenfriedersdorf site, processes for treating mine water were tested, with a particular focus on the contaminant arsenic. A continuation of this project is planned and currently in preparation. Additional project partners: Zinnerz Ehrenfriedersdorf GmbH, G.E.O.S. Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH, KSI Meinsberg e.V., Wismut GmBH, BIT Tiefbauplanung GmBH, ibes AG and Institut für Bergbau und Spezialtiefbau der TU Freiberg.
NIRUBIS (April 1, 2021 – March 31, 2024): In close cooperation with Geologische Landesuntersuchung GmbH Freiberg, novel measurement methods were tested on the Sauberg mining spoil heap to determine the potential content of valuable materials and pollutants within the heap. Additional project partners: Geocotec and ERZLABOR.
- re_pNEU (April 1, 2023 – December 31, 2025): This project — officially titled "Remining through fine-particle processing of tin tailings from the Ore Mountains using innovative pneumatic flotation technology, more sustainable processing strategies, and the potential to utilize silicate residues in bricks and paving stones" — focuses on fine particles within processing operations. Partners include Helmholz-Institut Freiberg für Ressourcentechnologie, TU Dresden, UVR-FIA GmBH, die Professur Strukturleichtbau und Kunststoffverarbeitung der TU Chemnitz and Baustoffwerk LIMEX-VENUSBERG GmbH.
